Gibson's VS. Leukemia: Round 3
Hello! Welcome to Matt and Melissa's Team in Training fundraising website. Team in Training is a fundraising program sponsored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our goal is to raise money for patient care and medical research to find a cure for blood related cancers. The program raises money through volunteers like Melissa and I who sign up for an athletic-endurance event (marathon, century bike ride, triathalon etc.)and raise money while training. Melissa has decided to train for the San Diego Rock'n Roll half-marathon while I will be competing in the full marathon at the same event.
Round I: As you may or may not know, I was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) in February of 1994. I was in remission within a month of chemotherapy, but had to continue treatments for the next two and a half years. I have now been in remission for almost 12 years and feel that Team in Training is one of the best ways to share my story with others. There is an enormous need in the realm of biomedical research for funding to find cures for leukemia and lymphoma. Due to recent government cut-backs, funding for biomedical research is at an all time low (I'm finishing my Ph.D. in cell biology so I've seen the effects of these cuts first hand) . Programs like Team in Training are essential to raise money for scientific grants so that oneday there will be a cure for all blood related cancers. Without your help, we may never be able to reach this goal. |
